Moqueca (pronounced mo-keh-kah or moo-keh-kah) is one of the classics of Brazilian Cuisine influenced by the Afro-Brazilian culture and its rich culinary heritage. It is a fish-and-shrimp-based stew, often cooked in a clay pot. The dish gets its name from the indigenous word po-kaka. There are two kinds of Moqueca, and we are making moqueca capixaba. This dish is a light, lemony fish and shrimp stew with a base of sautéed garlic, onion, tomatoes, and bell peppers. This dish will be served with steamed white rice and Couve a Mieira, which is shredded collard greens with bacon (bacon optional).
This is a gluten-free and dairy-free dish. Add a note if you want cilantro to be left out of the fish stew and if you want the bacon left out of the Couve a Mieira.
