The term sarmale, or sarma, comes from the Turkish word sarmak, which literally means “roll or package. Romanian Sarmales is a traditional food and a main course dish. Steamed cabbage leaves are stuffed with ground pork seasoned in garlic, caraway seeds, sauerkraut, dill, and bread crumbs and cooked in bacon, sauerkraut, and tomatoes. This dish is accompanied by a roasted eggplant and pepper dip called Ajvar and roasted beets with sour cream and dill sauce. Gluten-free and dairy-free options are not available.
