Pastelón is the nemesis for Lasagna. Both dishes are very similar as they include seasoned meat that is covered in cheese, and yet they are different as Lasagna is layered with pasta sheets and Pastelón is layered with sweet fried plantains. In many ways, Pastelón is a lighter dish and its sweet and savory taste will keep you going for more. Pastelón has many interpretations across the island of Puerto Rico. Our version includes thinly sliced, fried sweet plantains, eggs, mozzarella, and ground beef cooked in a savory sofrito of cilantro, culantro, tomato, sweet peppers, cumin, oregano, onions, and garlic. This dish comes with a side salad of lettuce with roasted bell peppers in a balsamic vinegar dressing.
This is a gluten-free dish.
